Historia de la familia Castelazo

 The answer to this question was recently clarified with the discovery of a letter  (see the English translation here ) that José Rodrigo Castelazo wrote to the newspaper "El Sol", in 1827, to respond to an insult from a curate. In this letter, José Rodrigo comments that his "ter-abuelo" (great-great-grandfather) arrived in Mexico in 1620, from Sicily. Another very interesting fact is the request for "composition of foreigner" made by Sebastián Rayo, father of Francisco and Nicolás Rayo Castelazo, in 1618 (see the originaldocument or for ease of reading the transcription  or the English translation ).   In this blog we will comment on the findings of the first Castelazos in Mexico. I want to assume that the Castelazos that appear in these acts are our relatives although in some cases I cannot say for sure. Tradition tells us that the first Castelazos were miners and in the Tlalpujahua acts we will find the oldest vein of our family tree, that is, the family line from which the vast majority (and very possibly all) of the Castelazos who live today in Mexico descend with all certainty. Additionally, there are some records from the early seventeenth century (1600s) in which some Castelazos appear in Mexico who were most likely the first of our family to arrive in this country. The difference with those of Tlalpujahua is that we do not have an uninterrupted line of the generations that existed between those first Castelazos and the first ones that are recorded in the family tradition and of which we have official records.  There are two ways to search for the records on the fam...

 Many years ago, like many children in the Castelazo families, I was told this version of the family's origin: "In colonial times, two Italian brothers arrived in Mexico, they were expert miners, one settled in Hidalgo and the other in Guanajuato. All the Castelazos in Mexico are descendants of those two brothers." The traditional story began to become more accurate for me when about 20 years ago, my cousin, Agustín García Castelazo, gave me a copy of the family tree he had inherited from our grandfather, Constantino Castelazo Vergara. Years later, at the last Castelazo Convention, which took place in Guanajuato, in 2006, a family tree almost identical to the one I had was distributed. Apparently, the initial source had been the memory or records of some prominent family members such as Juan Bautista Castelazo Alamán on the part of the Castelazos of Guanajuato, as well as Manuel Castelazo Fuentes and Constantino Castelazo Vergara on the part of those of Hidalgo. Juan Bautista Castelazo Díaz, el segundo hijo de Rodrigo Castelazo Piña y María Rita Díaz, merece una mención especial por lo menos por tres razones: por haber sido uno de los primeros Castelazo en llegar a Guanajuato, por haberse casado con la nieta del II Marqués de San Juan de Rayas y por ser el padre de Juan Bautista Castelazo Alamán, uno de los miembros más célebres de nuestra familia. El primer Juan Bautista nació el 27 de noviembre de 1820 en Real del Monte, Hidalgo. Ese año su padre escribió la famosa "Riqueza de la Veta Vizcaína", siendo el administrador general de las minas del Conde de Regla. Nació en una familia en la que existían grandes diferencias de edad. Su padre tenía 53 años, su madre 23 y sus dos medios hermanos mayores, Francisca de 26 e Ignacio de 24 fueron sus padrinos de bautismo. Los hijos de Rodrigo Castelazo y Josefa Badillo nacieron entre 1794 y 1808. No tengo noticias de que ninguno hubiera muerto en la infancia pero de las dos hijas menores, Dolores y Guadalupe, solo tengo sus actas de nacimiento. De los demás hay información diversa, a veces escasa y otras muy abundante. Dado que los dos matrimonios de Rodrigo Castelazo ocurrieron con una diferencia de 23 años, los hijos de Rita Díaz tenían edades similares a los nietos de Josefa Badillo. Estas diferencias perduran hasta nuestros días, por lo que la mayor parte de los Castelazo de Hidalgo somos sobrinos de los Castelazo de Guanajuato de nuestra misma edad. En este blog iniciaremos nuestros comentarios sobre esta generación de los Castelazo que hicieron su vida en Huasca y sus alrededores (Mineral del Monte, San Miguel Regla, Mineral del Chico), aunque ninguno de ellos nació ahí. En este blog me enfocaré en Ismael Castelazo Sánchez, tío de mi abuelo Constantino, que tuvo una exitosa carrera como experto en la minería y como funcionario de gobierno. Ismael fue hijo de Ignacio Castelazo Badillo, que tuvo seis hijos, tres de los cuales murieron jóvenes: Dolores, la mayor, a los 12 años, Juan, el cuarto hijo, a los 15 y Octaviana, la menor, a los 13. Un ejemplo más de la gran mortalidad infantil y juvenil que existía en México en esos años. Los otros tres, Ismael, Ignacio (mi bisabuelo) y Estanislao sobrevivieron y tuvieron una numerosa descendencia. Ismael Castelazo Sánchez nació en San Miguel Regla el 24 de abril de 1829. Estudió ingeniería de minas en el Colegio de Minería y el primer registro que tengo sobre él es un discurso que pronunció con motivo del aniversario de la independencia de México en 1852, a la temprana edad de 23 años, que fue publicado en el diario oficial "El Regulador".
